Beyond Kandy
Day trips and excursions from Hebron Gardens

Kandy is your base. From here, some of Sri Lanka's most spectacular destinations are within a half day's drive. Ancient kingdoms. Sacred mountains. Tea country that looks like it was painted by hand. Places that keep coming up in conversations for years after the trip.
We can arrange transport, drivers, and guides for any of these. Just let us know when you check in.
Ancient Sites
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Distance: 2.5 hours
Duration: Half day or full day
A fifth-century rock palace rising 200m above the surrounding jungle. Walk up through the boulder gardens, past the famous frescoes and the mirror wall, to the summit where the palace once stood. The views in every direction are worth every step.
Entry: ~$36 USD for foreigners
Best time: Opening (7 AM) to beat heat and crowds
Combine with:
Dambulla Cave Temple — 30 minutes from Sigiriya
Dambulla Cave Temple
Distance: 1.5 hours
Duration: 2-3 hours
Five caves cut into a golden rock, filled with 150+ Buddha statues and murals that have been there for 2,000 years. UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the best cultural experiences in Sri Lanka — less crowded than Sigiriya and more intimate.
Entry:
2,000 LKR
Polonnaruwa Ancient City
Distance: 3 hours
Duration: Full day
The ancient medieval capital of Sri Lanka. Better preserved than Anuradhapura and easier to navigate. Hire a bicycle at the entrance and spend the day cycling between temples, palaces, and enormous stone Buddhas in a landscape that feels untouched.
Entry: ~$25 USD for foreigners
Tip:
Bicycle hire is the best way to see it — negotiate at the gate
Anuradhapura Sacred City
Distance: 3-4 hours
Duration: Full day
Sri Lanka's first ancient capital and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Sacred Bo tree that has stood for over 2,200 years. Massive white dagobas. Ruins spread across kilometres of parkland. A full day, easily.
Entry:
~$25 USD for foreigners
Nature & Scenery
Knuckles Mountain Range
Distance: 1.5-2 hours to the range
Duration: Half or full day depending on route
UNESCO World Heritage cloud forests, dramatic peaks, and landscapes that change from tea country to jungle within a few kilometres. Less visited than Ella or Adam's Peak. The drive through the range — even without hiking — is one of the most scenic in Sri Lanka.
📝 See Play in the Hills for detailed hiking routes within the Knuckles range
Victoria Reservoir & Surrounds
Distance: 1 hour
Duration: Half day
Sri Lanka's largest reservoir, set against the Knuckles mountains. The road along the reservoir's edge is one of the most scenic drives near Kandy. Small fishing communities, dramatic water views, often empty of tourists.
Horton Plains & World's End
Distance: 3 hours
Duration: Full day — leave by 4 AM
Highland plateau at 2,100m. The walk to World's End — a sheer 880m cliff — is one of Sri Lanka's most dramatic viewpoints. Unique ecosystem with sambar deer and endemic birds. Must arrive before 9 AM before clouds obscure the view.
Entry: ~3,500 LKR for foreigners
Tip:
Arrange private vehicle — no public transport at that hour
Elephants
Wasgamuwa National Park
Distance: 2 hours
Duration: Half or full day safari
One of Sri Lanka's least-visited national parks — and one of the best for wild elephant sightings. Large herds move through the park seasonally, along with leopard, buffalo, sambar deer, and over 150 bird species. The Mahaweli River borders the park, drawing animals to its banks in the dry season. Far fewer tourists than Yala or Udawalawe, which means the experience feels genuinely wild.
Entry: ~$30 USD for foreigners + jeep hire
Best time: May–September (dry season, animals gather near water)
Tip: We can arrange jeep and driver — go early morning for best sightings
Hurulu Eco Park, Minneriya & Kaudulla National Parks
Distance: 2.5 / 3 hours hours
Duration: Full day
Three parks sitting side by side in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle — and together they form one of the best elephant gathering sites in Asia. During the dry season (roughly June to October), hundreds of wild elephants converge on the Minneriya and Kaudulla reservoirs as water levels drop — a phenomenon known as The Gathering, one of the largest assemblies of Asian elephants on the planet. Hurulu Eco Park offers a quieter alternative in the same area, with dense forest habitat and good leopard and sloth bear sightings. All three parks are easily combined with a visit to Sigiriya or Dambulla.
Tip: Minneriya and Kaudulla complement each other, rangers track where the elephants are that day and direct you to the right park. Ask us to arrange this when you book.
Entry: ~$30 USD for foreigners + jeep hire
Best time: June–October (The Gathering season — Minneriya and Kaudulla); year-round for Hurulu.
Tip:
Morning safari gives the best light and animal activity
Coast & Tea Country
Ella & the Ella Gap
Distance: 3 hours
Duration: Overnight stay recommended
The hill country town everyone passes through. Train journey from Kandy to Ella is the famous one. Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock, Rawana Falls. If you have an extra night, take the train and stay.
