Kandy Lake circles the city centre. The hill country opens up from here — tea plantations, ancient temples, the train journey everyone talks about.
But you’ll keep coming back to the garden café. That’s what happens.
147 acres of organised green — over 4,000 plant species, the famous royal palm avenue, orchid houses that feel like stepping into another climate. First established in 1371, formalised by the British in 1821. Early morning before the tour buses arrive is best: the light's better, the paths emptier.
Buddhism's most sacred relic, housed in golden caskets within a temple complex that's been standing since the 16th century. The evening pooja ceremony at 6:30 PM fills the temple with drumming, chanting, and the scent of lotus flowers.
Man-made by Sri Lanka's last king in 1807. A 3 km walk around it takes about an hour — best in the evening when the city cools down and locals come out to walk. The Temple of the Tooth sits on the northern shore.
Traditional Kandyan dance, fire walking, drumming. Touristy but genuinely skillful. Shows nightly around 7–8 PM at various venues in Kandy.
Lankathilaka, Embekka Devale, and Gadaladeniya temples. 14th-century architecture, wood carvings, and far fewer crowds than the Tooth Temple. Best visited with a guide or a tuk-tuk driver who knows the area.
Spices, vegetables, fruit, fish. The real market, not the tourist version. Go early for the full atmosphere. If you need something practical instead, Kandy City Centre (KCC) has a supermarket, food court and shops.
An 88-foot white Buddha overlooking Kandy. The view is the reason to go — a panoramic spread of the city, the lake, and the surrounding hills.
Forest reserve right in Kandy. Not a mountain hike — more of a nature walk through native forest, with three ponds, abundant birdlife, and monkeys likely. Cool, shaded, and a good option for hot days or casual walkers.
