Day trips worth the drive

Tea country, ancient fortresses, and the train everyone talks about.

Kandy sits at the centre of the island — which makes Hebron Gardens a very good base. The cultural triangle to the north, tea country to the south, and a railway station ten minutes away.

10 min to station

The Kandy to Ella Train Journey

One of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Seven hours through tea country, past waterfalls, across the Nine Arch Bridge. The most scenic section is Nanu Oya to Ella.

Departure: Kandy Railway Station (10 minutes from us)
Book: 1–2 days ahead for unreserved · 30 days for reserved
Tip: Third class gets you doorway views and locals. Second class is more comfortable but less atmospheric.
2.5 hours

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Ancient rock fortress. 5th-century frescoes. 1,200 steps to the top. Views that make you understand why they built a palace up there.

Entry: ~$36 USD for foreigners
Tip: Go at opening (7 AM) to avoid heat and crowds
1.5 hours

Dambulla Cave Temple

Five caves filled with Buddha statues and 2,000-year-old murals. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, often combined with Sigiriya as a day trip.

Entry: 2,000 LKR
1 hour

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Controversial for some, but you'll see elephants bathing in the river. Feeding times are 9:15 AM, 1:15 PM, and 5:00 PM. Bath time is 10 AM and 2 PM.

Entry: ~2,500 LKR
15 min

Ceylon Tea Museum

Housed in an old tea factory: four floors of tea history, machinery, and the evolution of Ceylon tea. Also the starting point for the Pekoe Trail.

Entry: 1,000 LKR
Hours: 8:30 AM – 3:45 PM (closed Mondays and Poya days)
30 min

Giragama Tea Factory

A working tea factory where you can see the full process — withering, rolling, oxidation, drying — with a tea tasting included. Actually interesting, not just tourist theatre.

Entry: Usually free, tipping expected
